Saturday afternoon on the college gridiron and a couple of teams from the Mid-American Conference will do battle as the Kent State Golden Flashes rumble with the Miami-Ohio Redhawks. Kent State baseball is back where it belongs. A three-game waltz through the 2018 Mid-American Conference Tournament ended with a 14-0 drubbing of Miami in Saturday night’s championship game at Sprenger Stadium in Avon that vaults the Golden Flashes back into the NCAA Tournament. Three years of frustration in the MAC tourney was cast aside with authority by the 2018 Flashes (39-16), who earned their first trip to the NCAA Regional since 2014.

'We finished the business. We played really good baseball in this tournament,' said KSU coach Jeff Duncan, who took over the program in 2014.
'It’s been a long time coming for us.' The Flashes will receive their regional assignment on Monday at noon, when the NCAA Tournament draw is announced live on ESPNU. No foe in the MAC’s newly formed six-team field could snuff the Flashes in any phase of the game during championship week. Toss out a rough ninth inning in the opener against Central Michigan, and Kent State outscored its three tournament opponents 29-4. Senior lefty Eli Kraus (10-3) tossed a two-hit shutout at the RedHawks (35-20) with a career-high 13 strikeouts, including the final three to end the game.
He was at the bottom of a massive dog pile after completing his MAC Tournament MVP performance. 'This is what we’ve been working for my four years.
It’s an incredible feeling,' said Kraus. 'We’ve been so close twice in my career. Today we just said whatever it takes we’re going to do it now, nothing less than winning it. It’s awesome.' Kraus set the tone by not allowing a Miami hitter to reach second base in the first five innings. 'Eli’s a big-stage pitcher.

Supporter comments sfm team: sfm for mac. Always has been. He loves the lights,' said Duncan. 'There’s not too many people that are more competive than him. He’s one of the best pitchers in the history of this program.
We were really proud to put him on the mound today.' Kraus was backed by stellar defense on the few occasions it was required, while Kent State’s lineup pecked away at the RedHawks before pounding them into submission with a six-run eighth inning. Junior Pavin Parks topped a laundry list of offensive heroes for the Flashes by going 3-for-6 with a two-run homer in the eighth. Junior Josh Hollander singled and drove in three runs, freshman Michael Turner and senior Reilly Hawkins each drove in a pair with a double and single, and senior Mason Mamarella contributed two singles and two RBI. 'This offense has been really steady all year long, then we exploded in this tournament,' said Duncan. 'We have a lot of good players and a great system, and we put it to work.'
Miami was just as bad as Kent State was good on Saturday. The RedHawks were playing their fourth game of the tournament, but sent a regular starter to the mound in sophomore Spencer Mraz. The right-hander struggled with his command from the get-go, and left in the third inning after hitting his second batter with the bases loaded to give Kent State a 4-0 lead. Reliever Jay Wilson promptly drilled senior Nick Kanavas in the back side with a pitch to make it 5-0 through three innings. A pop up that dropped between three Miami defenders set up a two-run fourth that also featured a wild pitch that scored a run for KSU. Already leading 8-0, Kent State exploded for six runs in the eighth — with the help of a Miami error and passed ball.
Parks’ two-run line shot over the right-field wall gave Kent State a two-touchdown advantage over the stunned RedHawks. The Flashes advance to the NCAA Regional for the seventh time since 2007 and will look to rekindle the magic they created while making their stunning run to the College World Series in 2012.
'We’ve had that bad taste in our mouth here, been on the wrong side the last three years,' said Duncan. 'It’s great to be on the winning side tonight.'
